What is a Breast Lift?
Clinically known as a mastopexy, a breast lift is a fairly popular procedure designed to correct the shape, position, and firmness of breasts that have sagged due to aging, skin laxity, pregnancy, major weight loss, or other factors. Loss of breast volume and excess loose skin may cause the breasts to lose their shape and droop heavily. Even the nipples may start pointing downwards in this condition.
Breast lift cosmetic surgery is an effective procedure in such a situation, if the breast size is normal, but the breasts have sagged due to loose skin. In a case where the sagging breasts are accompanied by loss of volume, the plastic surgeon may recommend breast augmentation in combination with breast lift surgery. Dr. Seify provides this procedure to his patients in Newport Beach, Orange County, CA and surrounding communities.
Many patients are unsure whether they need breast implant surgery or breast lift, or a combination of the two. An experienced cosmetic surgeon will evaluate which procedure is most suited, considering the patient’s general health condition, breast anatomy, and personal aesthetic goals. Patients with moderate body weight who suffer from severely drooping breasts are usually superb candidates for a breast lift procedure.
The candidate should be at least 18 years of age, and be in fine health with their medical history clean to enable them to undergo the plastic surgery. Non-smokers are preferred as candidates, but in any case the patient should stop smoking at least two to four weeks prior to surgery as well as a similar period after the surgery. Women with specific aesthetic goals, realistic expectations and a positive frame of mind can usually achieve the best satisfaction levels from the procedure.
When breast lift is performed independently, without the need to combine it with breast augmentation, the treatment plan will be made in accordance with the patient’s unique breast size and shape, the extent of sagging breasts, the size and position of the areolas, and the skin quality and laxity.
Dr. Seify is an expert surgeon who educates his patients in Newport Beach, Orange County, CA and nearby areas about all aspects of the surgery during the initial consultation. The procedure involves raising and firming of the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the underlying muscle and tissue to reshape and support a more youthful breast contour.
Breast lift cosmetic surgery is performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation as the case may be. Following the anesthesia, the plastic surgeon will begin the procedure by making an incision as per the pre-determined treatment plan. The following three options for an incision are usually available:
- Incision around the areola.
- Incision around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease.
- An additional incision horizontally along the breast crease, apart from vertical, and areolar incisions.
Through the incision, the surgeon will lift and reshape the underlying breast tissue to enhance breast firmness and contour. The nipple and areola will be raised to a more natural, youthful position, and the size of the areolas may also be reduced, if necessary. Excess loose skin is excised to achieve tighter, smoother breast skin. Following the procedure, the cosmetic surgeon will close the incisions with sutures.
Results and Recovery
Outcome of a breast lift procedure can be seen immediately. Full effects of the surgery will become clearer as the post-op swelling reduces and incision lines fade. The patient will have the breasts wrapped in a dressing or bandage for one or two days following the surgery. A thin tube may be placed for a few days underneath the skin to drain any excess fluid.
The surgeon will provide a surgical bra or elastic bandage that must be worn for a few weeks to support the breasts, resolve swelling and expedite the healing process. The surgeon may prescribe pain relieving medications for a few days to keep the patient comfortable. Results of breast lift are usually long lasting. Patients who are able to maintain body weight and follow an active lifestyle and balanced diet can continue to enjoy the results of a breast lift for several years.
