What is Botox?
Botox is an FDA-approved injectable neurotoxin treatment derived from an ingredient known as botulinum toxin type A. When administered in small doses, this toxin can temporarily and safely paralyze small facial muscles that contribute to wrinkles. Botox works by strategically immobilizing small muscles in targeted areas to prevent them from contracting and forming expression lines. The unique formulation of Botox stops muscle contraction and eliminates folds in the skin for a smoother and more refreshed complexion.
Fine lines around the corners of the eyes, commonly referred to as crow’s feet, along with wrinkles between and above the eyebrows, can benefit from the effects of Botox. Neurotoxin injectables like Botox block signals from the nerves to the muscles to prevent wrinkle formation. With a qualified injector such as those at Newport Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Associates, you can achieve natural-looking youth without losing your everyday facial expressions.
Who is Botox For?
Botox is designed to be safe for use for just about anyone. With minimal side effects and a straightforward procedure, adult patients of all ages can enjoy the anti-aging benefits of Botox treatments. More and more young patients today are turning to Botox injections to prevent lines and wrinkles before they form, maintaining the youthful qualities of their skin. Patients between the ages of 30 and 65 frequently undergo Botox injections to keep their wrinkles in check without plastic surgery, and those who have already had plastic surgery often use Botox to ensure the longevity of their results. Patients interested in Botox treatments should have realistic expectations about what these injections can do for them. Dr. Seify can help you to determine if Botox is the right treatment for your needs during an in-person consultation and discussion of your specific aesthetic goals.
What to Expect From Your Botox Injections
When you arrive for your Botox appointment, a seasoned member of our expert staff will determine the optimal location sites for your injections that will yield your desired results. These injection sites will be cleaned and marked to ensure precision and make sure that the effects of Botox will stay within the targeted area. Administering Botox injections with a high level of care and expertise prevents unnatural results that cause the face to look stiff or frozen. If too much product is used or the Botox spreads outside of its localized area, unwanted muscle relaxation and a loss of facial expression can occur, which is why our team takes the utmost care when administering neurotoxin injections. Botox treatments typically take less than 30 minutes to complete and can easily be scheduled during your lunch break or a small window in your busy schedule. Botox injections are performed using a very fine needle and are considered by most patients to be relatively comfortable and painless. However, topical anesthesia can be applied prior to receiving your injections to ensure you are kept comfortable during your appointment.

What to Expect After Your Botox Injections
There is little to no recovery time necessary after receiving your Botox injections. Side effects from Botox injections are minimal but can include discomfort, redness, bruising or swelling at the site of your injections. However, you should be able to manage these symptoms with ice packs or over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen. Some of these common side effects can subside in a few hours, while others may persist for a few days. You can resume all of your normal activities immediately, though Dr. Seify may advise that you avoid direct sun exposure to prevent the effects of sun damage. Depending on your side effects, you may wish to take a day for social downtime to allow for any noticeable bruising and swelling to subside. For this reason, many of our patients will schedule their appointment on a Friday to allow their body time to heal before returning to their day-to-day routine.
Your Botox Results
The effects of Botox injections will gradually become apparent over the course of three to five days, though it can take up to one full week before your final results fully develop. As wrinkles and fine lines diminish from your targeted areas, you can expect to enjoy your new wrinkle-free complexion for up to three to four months, depending on how your body responds to the treatment. Most patients will schedule their next Botox appointment around the three-month mark to ensure there is no lapse in their youthful appearance. In order to continue enjoying your Botox results, you should plan on scheduling your Botox maintenance treatments periodically throughout the year. Fine lines and wrinkles will slowly redevelop over time as the effects of Botox wear off. Still, Botox injections can safely be administered on an ongoing basis to continue to keep expression lines and wrinkles at bay. In fact, some patients find that with regular Botox injections, they can actually cause facial muscles to shrink due to their constant inactivity, eventually requiring less product to achieve the same results.

Botox FAQs
Recovery after Botox is quick, with minimal downtime. You can return to work immediately, but avoid strenuous exercise and lying down for 3 hours, or rubbing the treated areas for 24 hours. Minor bruising, redness, or headaches may occur but typically resolve quickly. After 24 hours, normal activities, including exercise, can be resumed.
Most people can get Botox treatments, but there are some exceptions. Botox is generally safe for healthy adults looking to reduce wrinkles or manage certain medical conditions. However, it’s not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, individuals with certain neuromuscular disorders, or those with allergies to any of the ingredients in Botox.
To prevent bruising after Botox, avoid blood thinners, alcohol, and caffeine for at least 5 days before treatment. After the procedure, apply ice, keep your head elevated, and avoid heat and strenuous exercise for 24 hours. If bruising occurs, use arnica, bromelain, or concealer to help it heal and cover it up. Bruising is usually mild and fades within a few days.
The most suitable areas for Botox are typically those with dynamic wrinkles caused by facial expressions. These include the forehead lines, frown lines between the eyebrows (glabella lines), and crow’s feet around the eyes. Botox is also used for other areas like the jawline (to slim the face), chin (to smooth dimpling), neck bands, and even underarms (to reduce excessive sweating). The best treatment areas depend on your specific concerns and goals.
Botox typically needs to be reapplied every 3-4 months to maintain its effects. The exact frequency can vary depending on individual factors such as the treated area, your response to the treatment, and the severity of the wrinkles. Regular follow-ups with your provider will help determine the best schedule for your needs.
Yes, your face will still be able to move after Botox, but with reduced muscle activity. Botox targets specific muscles to lessen their movement, which helps smooth wrinkles. While you will retain most of your natural facial expressions, the intensity of movements in the treated areas will be diminished. This helps achieve a more youthful appearance without completely freezing your face.
