Breast Augmentation Recovery

Breast augmenation plastic surgery can be customized in terms of the implant choice and the incision technique and placement of implants. The recovery in this cosmetic surgery procedure may vary from patient to patient depending on these factors as well as the patient’s natural ability to heal. The experience and skill of the plastic surgeon will also play a role in terms of how conservatively the surgery is performed.

Dr. H.M. Seify is an eminent cosmetic surgeon providing breast augmentation and other procedures to patients in Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, and surrounding communities. During the initial consultation, Dr. Seify will discuss various aspects of the surgery, including the recovery process. Busy moms and working women are particularly keen to know about the expected recovery period, and Dr. Seify will help them make an informed decision.

Immediate Post-op Period

Once the breast augmentation plastic surgery procedure has been completed, the staff will shift the patient from the operating room to a recovery area. Observation and monitoring for a few hours will be required, and the patient will recover from the effect of general anesthesia or IV sedation. In the initial period, the treated area of the breasts will be covered in bandages. The cosmetic surgeon will usually provide a surgical bra for added support to the breasts for a few weeks.

This will help reduce swelling and expedite the recovery process. Most patients will be in a position to go back home the same day. The patient may be required to arrange for someone to drive her back safely to the home. Dr. Seify will usually recommend his patients in Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, and nearby areas to have someone stay over with them at least for the first 24 hours for assistance.

Post-op Instructions

The post-operative care instructions provided by the cosmetic surgeon should be followed appropriately for faster and safer recovery. Most surgeons may prescribe pain relieving medications for a few days to keep the patient comfortable during the early phase of recovery. Other drugs to minimize the risk of infection may also be prescribed. The first follow-up visit to remove the sutures and examine the progress of healing may be schedule one week after the surgery.

First Week of Recovery

Mild to moderate pain the incision areas of the breasts will be experienced during the first few days. In the first week, the bruising and swelling is likely to be more conspicuous, and will begin reducing from the next week. The patient may perform light activities and walking during the first three to five days, but going out to work should be avoided for the first week.

The plastic surgeon will advise the patient against lifting of heavy weights and engaging in any strenuous exercises or activities for the first four to six weeks. Breathing difficulty and chest tightness is common during the first week. The patient may stay in a semi-upright position during the first week as far as possible. After the first week, most patients will be in a position to resume their work and other regular activities.
