Breast augmentation or augmentation mammaplasty ranks among the more popular plastic surgery procedures in the U.S. today. With advancements in surgical techniques and FDA approvals for highly cohesive silicone breast implants, the results of this cosmetic surgery have become safer and more natural looking. Dr. Hisham Seify is a board certified plastic surgeon providing this procedure to patients in Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, and surrounding communities.
Who should opt for Breast Augmentation?
Women with one or more of the following attributes may be considered as outstanding and incredible candidates for breast augmentation by an experienced cosmetic surgeon:
- Breasts are naturally small-sized or under-developed.
- The patient is keen to increase the size of breasts for aesthetic reasons, despite having normal sized breasts.
- Breast volume has been lost following a pregnancy, breast feeding or due to a substantial weight loss.
- One breast is conspicuously smaller than the other.
- The patient needs breast reconstruction following breast tissue loss in a mastectomy or due to an injury.
Dr. Seify will carefully evaluate the patient’s general health condition, breast anatomy, and personal aesthetic goals before recommending breast augmentation plastic surgery to his patients in Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, and nearby areas.
Selecting the Right Type of Breast Implants
The choice of breast implants will usually have a bearing on the final outcome of breast augmentation procedure. This procedure is fairly customizable due to the breast implant choices available. Patients can choose between traditional saline implants and advanced quality silicone implants.
The plastic surgeon will explain the pros and cons of both qualities to help the patient make an informed choice. Implant size can vary from 120cc to 960cc, and their shape may be round or teardrop. Textured or plain surfaced implants may be chosen.
Breast augmentation cosmetic surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Incisions choices usually include around the areola, below the breast crease, in the underarm, surrounding the belly button. The surgeon will start the procedure by placing an incision in a pre-determined location to keep the scarring inconspicuous. A breast pocket will be created through the incision for the implants.
Breast implant placement can be done underneath the chest muscle or between the breast tissue and chest muscle. The cosmetic surgeon will be able to complete the surgery in one to two hours in most cases, depending on the circumstances. In some cases, breast lift may be performed along with breast augmentation. Once the procedure is over, the surgeon will close the incisions with sutures or skin adhesive.
Recovery and Results
Most patients will experience mild to moderate pain or soreness in the breast area for the first few days. The surgeon will prescribe pain medications to keep the patient comfortable. Light activities can be performed at home, and the patient will be in a position to go back to work after a week or 10 days. Lifting of heavy weights and vigorous exercises should be avoided for about four to six weeks. Results will be visible immediately after the surgery, but full results will appear over several months as the bruising and swelling resolves completely.
