Breast Reduction Plastic Surgery Procedure Steps

Breast Reduction cosmetic surgery procedure is designed to reduce the size of breasts to make them more proportionate to the rest of the body. Apart from aesthetic benefits, the procedure may also help reduce pain in the shoulders, back, and neck.

During the initial consultation with the patient, the surgeon will discuss various steps involved in the breast reduction surgery.

Once the patient is aware about how the breast reduction procedure will be performed, it can mitigate her anxiety levels and help improve her confidence about the procedure. Dr. Hisham Seify is a perspicacious and board certified plastic surgeon providing breast reduction surgery to patients in Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, and other towns and neighborhoods in this section of the state.

Consultation

The first step in the breast reduction treatment process will be a detailed consultation with the patient. The surgeon will determine the candidacy and assess the patient’s anatomical and aesthetic goals. Based on this input, they will create a customized breast reduction plastic surgery plan. An evaluation of the patient’s current health and breast anatomy will also be performed. Specialized mammograms may be ordered in a few cases.

Anesthesia

Breast reduction surgery is typically performed with the patient under general anesthesia. But in some cases, the surgeon may use local anesthesia with sedation. Once the patient is brought into the surgeon room, an anesthesiologist or a nurse anesthetist will perform this procedure. They will usually remain present throughout the procedure to monitor the patient’s response.

Incision Placement

Breast reduction may be performed using one of these incision techniques: an anchor shaped incision, a vertical incision, or a scar-less incision. The anchor incision will be created around the lower half of the areola border, going vertically down the breast, and then horizontally across the natural breast crease.

The vertical incision will be placed around the lower half of the areola, and proceeding vertically down the breast to minimize scarring. A scar-less incision will involve very tiny incisions made in discreet locations through which fat tissue will be removed using liposuction.

Fat and Skin Reduction

Through the incisions, the surgeon will remove the excess fat tissue and loose skin from the lower portion of the breasts. Some patients may only have excess fatty tissue in the breasts, and no glandular tissue. In such a case, the surgeon may only apply the liposuction technique to reduce breast size. This will reduce tissue trauma, and result in minimal scarring and faster recovery.

Repositioning of the Nipples

Depending on the patient’s breast anatomy, the amount of tissue reduction performed, and the patient’s personal preferences, nipple repositioning at a raised level may have to be performed. The surgeon will detach the nipple from the breast and then graft it to a more natural looking position. This step becomes more important for women with excessively large breasts, who need very significant size reduction.

Incision Closure

After the procedure, the surgeon will carefully close the incisions with sutures and place temporary drains under the skin in the incision sites.
