Breast Reduction Plastic Surgery Recovery

Surgical techniques to perform cosmetic surgery procedures such as breast reduction have improved over the years, making the surgery less invasive and more effective. But breast reduction procedure will still involve a considerable recovery process.

The patient should have the commitment to go through the recovery as per the surgeon’s advice in order to achieve the full and final results in a safe and desirable way.

During the initial consultation, the surgeon will explain various aspects of breast reduction surgery, including the expected recovery. Working women and busy moms should particularly consider the downtime involved and make a well-considered decision. Stellar, accomplished, and board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Hisham Seify provides breast reduction to patients in Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, and surrounding locations.

Estimated Downtime

Following breast reduction surgery, the patient should be prepared to stay at home for about a week to 10 days in most cases. She should take sufficient rest initially, but the surgeon will encourage her to perform short walks and light activities within the home to improve blood flow to the incision sites. Contact with incision areas should be minimized, and strain on the incisions must be avoided until the healing has progressed.

While the recovery and downtime will differ in case of breast reduction plastic surgery from one patient to another, most patients will have a smooth recovery and will be ready to return to their normal routine or go back to work in about a week to 10 days. Heavy lifting of weights and vigorous exercises should, however, continue to be avoided for one month.

Surgical Bra

The breasts will be wrapped in bandages for one or two days after the surgery. Thereafter, the patient may have to visit the surgeon’s office to have them removed. At this time, the bandages will be replaced with a special surgical bra for compression. The patient will be required to wear this bra throughout the early recovery phase. The bra should be worn at all times except while taking a shower.

The surgical bra or a wrap-style compression garment will provide support to the breast tissue and muscle, and help the breasts to firmly acquire their new shape. Dedicated and judicious cosmetic surgeon Dr. Seify receives patients from Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, and other cities and communities for breast reduction surgery.

Recovery Instructions

The patient will be asked to avoid smoking for at least a certain time period before and after the surgery. Nicotine in tobacco can obstruct the function of red blood cells, slow down the pace of recovery, and increase the risk of complications.

Blood thinning drugs and NSAIDs will also have to be avoided for a few days. The patient should avoid bending down initially and refrain from any strenuous activities. Steam bath and swimming pool should also be avoided for a few weeks.

Pain Management

Some soreness and discomfort in the incision sites will be felt in the first few days. The surgeon may prescribe some pain medications to keep the patient completely comfortable. The patient should not drive or perform other such activities that require full alertness while she is on pain meds.
