Breast reduction, clinically known as reduction mammaplasty, is a cosmetic surgery procedure to reduce the size and volume of breasts to make them more proportionate to the rest of the body.
The procedure is often performed with a goal to make the breasts look more attractive, but may sometimes be medically necessary to provide relief to the patient from the problems associated with excessively large breasts.
During the initial consultation, the surgeon will educate the patient about the benefits and limitations of breast reduction, and help her make an informed choice. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Hisham Seify provides breast reduction surgery to patients in Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, and surrounding communities across the horizon.
Challenges with Oversized Breasts
Oversized breasts can compromise the upper body symmetry and proportion. Additionally, heavy and pendulous breasts may cause obstructions in everyday activities such as sports or certain types of movements or bending.
Some patients feel embarrassed to wear certain types of clothing, and may become self conscious of their appearance in a social setting. Excessively large breasts may also cause frequent pain in the back, neck and shoulders. Irritation or rashes may occur within the heavy breast fold or crease.
Candidacy
The surgeon will examine the patient’s size and appearance of breasts, assess the skin elasticity in breast area, check their general health condition and review medical history, and discuss her personal aesthetic goals before recommending breast reduction. Women who are unhappy with their disproportionately sized breasts, whether in terms of aesthetic balance or physical discomfort, may be good candidates for breast reduction plastic surgery.
The surgeon will be more inclined to recommend breast reduction in cases where the stubborn breast fat and tissue do not respond to exercise and diet. A good candidate should have a positive mindset, clear cosmetic goals, a commitment to follow the surgeon’s care instructions, and keep realistic expectations from the procedure.
Procedure
Breast reduction surgery is usually performed with the patient under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation. Following anesthesia, the surgeon will create incisions in discreet locations to remove excess fat tissue. Depending on the individual treatment plan for a patient, the incision may be made circumferentially around the areola, or created in a keyhole pattern.
The surgeon may sometimes use vertical or anchor shaped incisions, depending on the extent of fat and skin to be removed. Through the incision, the surgeon will remove the underlying excess breast fat tissue, and tighten sagging breast muscles. In some cases, the size of the areolas may also be reduced, and the nipples repositioned. Breast tissue will be sutured deep inside to support the new shape of breasts, and incisions will finally be closed with sutures or skin adhesive.
Results
It will take a few weeks for the swelling and bruising to resolve, and the incisions lines to get thinner. Full effects of the procedure will appear as the healing improves. Results with breast reduction will be long lasting, if the patient maintains an active and healthy lifestyle.
