Gynecomastia surgery, commonly known as male breast reduction, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to correct the condition of enlarged or over-developed breasts in men. Enlarged breasts may occur in men at any age. Common causes behind this condition may include heredity factors, hormonal changes, certain diseases, or use of certain medications. The condition may not only affect the aesthetic appearance of a male, but may also cause emotional and psychological challenges. Dr. Hisham Seify is a board certified plastic surgeon with experience in treating conditions such as enlarged male breasts. Patients in Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, and surrounding communities may consult with Dr. Seify for best possible treatment options.

Common Characteristics

The surgeon will examine the patient to identify typical characteristics that establish the presence of enlarged male breast and a need for gynecomastia cosmetic surgery. The following conditions normally characterize this condition:
  • Excess localized fat in the breast area.
  • Excess development of glandular tissue in breast area.
  • A combination of both glandular tissue and excess fat.
The condition of excess fat or tissue may occur in both breasts or a single breast only.

Candidates for Gynecomastia Surgery

The cosmetic surgeon may recommend male breast reduction surgery after evaluating the health condition and breast anatomy of the patient. Dr. Seify may recommend this procedure for patients in Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, and other areas, if they have the following attributes:
  • The patient has decent general physical health and moderate body weight.
  • The patient is unhappy with the existence of excessive breast tissue.
  • The development of breast fat and tissue has stabilized.
  • The patient has realistic expectations.
  • The patient is a non-smoker or is willing to stop smoking several weeks before and after the procedure.
Male breast reduction plastic surgery may also be performed on adolescents, but secondary procedures may be necessary if the breast tissue development persists in the future.

Procedure

Depending on the extent of male breast tissue, the plastic surgeon will prepare a surgical treatment approach to reduce breast size, and flatten and enhance the chest contour. In an extreme case of gynecomastia, the heavy breast tissue may cause the breast to droop and stretch the area. In such cases, excess skin may be surgically excised and the size and position of the areola may be improved. The procedure may be performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation. If the primary problem is due to excess fatty tissue, the surgeon may decide to use liposuction techniques alone. However, if the condition involves excess skin or glandular breast tissue, surgical excision techniques may also be applied. Excision is also used if areola reduction is necessary.

Results

Results of male breast reduction are usually long lasting or permanent. If the condition occurred due to the use of certain medications or due to excess body weight, the patient may have to stay free of such medications in the future and maintain a stable body weight. An experienced cosmetic surgeon will be able to conceal the scars in the natural breast contours.
As summer rolls around many couples are making their way to summer vacations, days on the boat, day trips to the beach, and outdoor activities like jet skiing. As you observe men and women enjoying the sun it’s hard not to notice men who may wear their T-shirts without ever removing them even in the hottest sun and the most active activities. For some of these men the reason for keeping on their T-shirts could be embarrassment. There are two main reasons that men are embarrassed about their bodies. For some men there could be an excessive growth of male breast tissue which causes men to have an enlarged appearance to their breast. This can cause embarrassment since enlarged the breast are associated with women and not men. This condition is called gynecomastia. Dr. Seify effectively treats gynecomastia allowing his patients to regain their confidence and to go shirtless in public unashamed. To perform gynecomastia an incision is made around the nipple areola complex where the dark and light skin colors meet. This incision heals remarkably well and is virtually undetectable within a short period of time following surgery. Through this incision Dr. Seify removes not only the growth of breast tissue but also the fat that may lie underneath. The procedure has mild to moderate discomfort and pain. The patient wears a compression vest following the surgery based on the recommended time. This helps to re-drape the skin and allow the chest to have a smooth and aesthetically pleasing appearance. The other reason men are likely to feel embarrassed about their bodies would be if they have excess thickness on their abdomen. Liposuction of the abdomen for men is an excellent option for removing small amounts of fat and contouring the abdomen for a more toned and flat abdomen. Liposuction of the abdomen will reduce the inches for the waist size. Men who have intra-abdominal fat or excess loose skin will not be a candidate for liposuction. So, if your man is embarrassed to go shirtless the summer it is the perfect time to discover if gynecomastia surgery or liposuction are a viable option. Patients who are considering either of these plastic surgery procedures are encouraged to contact Dr. Seify and schedule a consultation. Review all of Dr. Seify’s Procedures and Treatments:
drseify-whitecoatThe last three decades have been a whirlwind, in terms of rapidly increasing the knowledge and access to information globally. Of course this has been spearheaded by the Internet. Plastic surgery has been a part of this rapid growth mostly due to increased patient demand, much of it fueled by the Internet and access to more information. This has also allowed plastic surgery to be more affordable now than it ever has been. Depending on how you look at it, this has been both positive and negative for patients. The positive, has been that because of the demand and affordability there are more plastic surgeons to choose from than ever before. Also, plastic surgeons have to remain on the forefront of technology and new techniques in order to provide the services patients want. The negative, has been that this demand has created a new frontier that is much like the old Wild West. This evolving untamed landscape has allowed physicians to dabble in what some feel is a lucrative cosmetic surgery market while learning their way through performing surgery one patient at a time. Any physician can perform cosmetic plastic surgery. This is especially true if it is performed within his or her office. This practice is seen most commonly with liposuction and breast augmentation. These two procedures are the most popular procedures so it is not surprising that these are the procedures most commonly performed by physicians performing cosmetic surgery. Depending on the state, there are few regulations, if any that prevent a physician from performing these procedures within an office based surgical suite. Different versions of facelifts have been added to this mix in order to capitalize on the ever-increasing baby-boom generation. The new frontier is fueled by patients who are aggressively pursuing ways to do “something” to improve their appearance while avoiding the cost and downtime of what they may consider major surgery. Dr. Seify consults with patients and helps them to understand that the most important part of the plastic surgeons recommendation is first and foremost the right procedure and the safety of the patient. This should never be compromised in order to meet a patient’s budget or amount of time they have to recover from the procedure. Secondary recommendations based on these factors are fine, provided the patient is prepared for the difference in expected results. Dr. Seify explains to patients that while the landscape for plastic surgery can be confusing because there are so many choices, he welcomes patient’s questions and his knowledgeable staff is available at any time to help patients make informed decisions. Patients who are considering plastic surgery are encouraged to contact Dr. Seify and schedule a consultation.
Being a parent has many challenges. One of the most painful challenges a parent can endure is watching their child in emotional pain as a result of bullying and teasing. A great deal of attention has been placed in the media on children being teased and bullied via the Internet. Social media has certainly made bullying and teasing much easier and given it much greater reach. The focus is often placed upon girls being teased because it is believed by many that girls are more emotional and that the impact is greater than boys. However; boys, especially teenage boys can be self-conscious about their bodies as they change with age. For some, excessive breast tissue can become evident as they enter puberty. While in some cases this may be accompanied with being overweight or obese this is not always the case. Even boys who are at or near their ideal body weight can suffer from excess breast tissue which is known as gynecomastia. The impact of this excessive breast tissue which has slang terms including “man boobs”or” moobs “is rarely painful physically however emotionally it can be devastating. As a parent, you may ponder whether seeking the advice of a plastic surgeon to correct this condition is a good idea. Perhaps you may think that fixing the source of bullying using plastic surgery sends the wrong message to your child. The reality is that children who are teased and bullied often have a difficult time achieving success in school and outside school activities because they are self-conscious and less likely to take the steps necessary to be outgoing and involved. If your child is also overweight this condition could contribute to his lack of willingness and motivation to exercise. Also, depression and loneliness can lead to overeating which also contributes to obesity. Dr. Seify encourages parents to consult with him to determine if their son is a candidate for gynecomastia surgery. In the initial consultation Dr. Seify will determine if the child is truly suffering from excessive breast tissue or if the primary source is excessive fat on the chest. It is important for parents to understand that liposuction of the chest alone will not improve the appearance of excessive breast tissue. In many cases it can cause the breast tissue to be even more of visible if the glandular tissue is not removed and only liposuction is performed. For this reason, it is critical that parents seek the advice of a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Seify who is experienced in treating gynecomastia patients. In some cases, although rare, Dr. Seify may be able to submit the proper documentation for parents to obtain insurance coverage for the procedure. Parents who are considering gynecomastia surgery for their sons should consider the possibility of surgery early in the summer so that their son will be healed and ready to enjoy the latter part of summer and a new beginning to the next school year. Parents who are considering gynecomastia surgery for their sons are encouraged to contact Dr. Seify’s office and schedule a consultation.
For many men the thought of having plastic surgery is not a positive one. Gynecomastia surgery is a procedure that treats excessive male breast tissue by removing the tissue and surrounding fat. For many men this is a source of embarrassment. The concept of going shirtless during the summer is not an option for men who are affected negatively by gynecomastia. Dr. Seify explains to his male patients that for some patients gynecomastia is a genetic issue. For other patients, lifestyle choices including steroids or other drugs could have contributed to the appearance of excessive male breast tissue. Whatever the reason, for many men especially as they age, the breast tissue has become a focal point in their wardrobe selection. The winter months are one of the most popular times for men to consider gynecomastia surgery. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and most patients are able to return to work in as few as three days. Dr. Seify will instruct patients to wear a compression vest following surgery. This vest helps to re-drape the skin after the tissue and that has been removed. Most patients find the surgery to have only mild to moderate discomfort. The  compression vest is worn following surgery. It is virtually undetectable underneath a shirt or sweater. Most patients will heal completely within 3 to 4 weeks following surgery. Scheduling surgery during the winter months ensures that the incisions, although well hidden, will be healed. Dr. Seify encourages men who have trouble with the appearance of large male breast to consider gynecomastia surgery and schedule a consultation.
