View Our Specials The goal of a facelift is to reverse the signs of aging on the face by tightening the underlying facial tissues and muscles, removing excess fatty deposits in the face, neck, and jaw, eliminating wrinkles, lines, and folds, and excising loose or saggy skin. The effects of a well-done facelift are generally visible for about 7-10 years after the procedure, but unfortunately, despite our best efforts, time and environmental exposure continue to affect and damage our appearance. Eventually, many people who have already had one facelift will seek another to correct the continued effects of time. A revision, or secondary, facelift is, simply put, a facelift performed on an individual who has already had a prior facelift procedure at some point the past.
Candidates for a revision facelift include:
- Individuals who have had a successful facelift 7-10 years previously, but are beginning to see the effects of aging reappear. However, it is not necessary to wait this long before having a revision facelift; individuals who feel their facelift was successful but the results have not lasted as long as anticipated can also be excellent candidates.
- Individuals whose facelift did not correct ALL the signs of aging. When a facelift is performed without an accompanying neck lift, for instance, the face may look rejuvenated while the neck and jawline remain lax, droopy, and/or saggy. When performed without an accompanying cheek lift, the cheeks can remain droopy and the lower eyes hollowed out, undermining the results of the facelift. A revision facelift can correct these problems for a better overall appearance.
- Individuals whose facelift resulted in a “windswept”, “tight”, or “pulled back” appearance. Modern facelift techniques enable the experienced surgeon to manipulate the structures of the face at a deeper level than was possible in the past, leading to far more natural-looking results and more satisfied patients.
Revision facelifts involve many of the same techniques as a “first-time” facelift, but entail a greater level of complexity. A revision facelift must take into account not only the patient’s unique aesthetic goals, but must also account for scar tissue from the previous surgery. The surgeon must also manipulate facial structures that have already been surgically altered and moved from their original location. When carefully planned and performed by an experienced surgeon, the results of a revision facelift can literally push back the hands of time, leaving you with a rejuvenated, youthful, naturally-beautiful appearance.
The structures of the face are extremely intricate, and modern revision facelift techniques involve manipulating the tissues and muscles deep underneath the skin. So it is especially important to select a surgeon with a high level of skill, extensive experience with facial surgeries, and a keen aesthetic eye. Dr. Hisham Seify at Newport Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Associates in Newport Beach, California is a Board Certified plastic surgeon with the qualifications and expertise needed to make your revision facelift a success. And as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the UCLA School of Medicine and Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of California at Irvine, Dr. Seify has unique access to the latest cutting-edge techniques needed to make every revision facelift safe, successful, and naturally-beautiful.
A revision facelift generally takes between two to five hours, depending on how many areas of the face require revision. The procedure can be carried out in the surgeon’s office under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. The surgeon will utilize small, strategically-placed incisions in front of and behind the ear in order to minimize any scarring. Liposuction will remove any unwanted fat deposits that have re-developed in the face, jowls, and/or neck. The muscles will be re-tightened and loose, sagging skin on the face and neck will be removed or sutured into place as required.
The recovery time need after a revision facelift will vary from patient to patient, depending on the scope of the surgery and the areas impacted. Some patients may experience mild to moderate pain, and feel that their skin seems “tight”. Most patients will experience bruising and swelling immediately after the procedure; these symptoms can be alleviated by elevating the head and applying cold compresses. Most of the swelling and discomfort should diminish within 7-10 days, but the complete healing will take approximately 3-4 weeks. The results of the surgery will be visible immediately, but your appearance will continue to improve as the swelling continues to decline over the next month or two.
