What is a Neck Lift?
A
neck lift cosmetic surgery is designed to improve the aesthetic appearance of the neck and make it more youthful looking. The procedure may include removal of excess loose skin from the neck, tightening of underlying neck muscles, and removal of excess fat to enhance the neck contour. Neck lift procedure is typically performed in conjunction with
facelift plastic surgery.
Both neck and face should appear proportionate and even looking for best results. In some situations, the patient may just need a neck lift procedure. As an experienced
cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Seify first evaluates the facial and neck profile of his patients in Newport Beach, Orange County, CA and nearby areas. Depending on the evaluation and the patient’s aesthetic goals, he may recommend a neck lift or a combination of facelift and neck lift surgery.
Neck Lift Procedure Options
The
plastic surgeon will adopt a customized treatment approach for neck lift, depending on the patient’s condition. Neck lift procedure may vary depending on what may be most appropriate in the case of a particular patient. If the patient suffers from a “Turkey Wattle” neck, the surgeon may adopt a surgical technique that involves incisions underneath the chin or behind the ears or both. Through the incisions, the surgeon will tighten the platysma muscle, or even remove it, if necessary.
Advanced surgical techniques involve the use of an endoscope. This makes the procedure less invasive and the surgeon can tighten the neck muscle and remove excess skin and fat through smaller incisions. General anesthesia may be used if the procedure is extensive, or the surgeon may opt for local anesthesia with IV sedation, depending on the patient’s needs.
In cases where the patient needs only removal of excess fat from the neck, the surgeon may decide to perform a liposuction
plastic surgery in prior consultation with the patient. In this treatment, the surgeon will make a minor incision below the chin to reduce excess fat. Sometimes liposuction may be combined with other procedures for more comprehensive outcome.
If the patient is bothered due to excess skin on the neck, the surgeon will excise the unnecessary part of the skin and raise it to a more youthful position. The skin will be repositioned and secured into its new place with the help of sutures or skin adhesives. Depending on the complexity of the procedure, the duration of a neck lift
cosmetic surgery may range from two to four hours.
Neck Lift Pre-op Preparation
To ensure the success of a neck lift procedure, the patient should follow the pre-op and post-op instructions of the
cosmetic surgeon carefully. Certain medications may have to be avoided for a few weeks prior to surgery to reduce the risk of uncontrolled bleeding. Patients who smoke will be required to quit smoking at least one month before surgery as well as one month after the surgery.
Working patients should plan to take at least a week off from work, but the exact time required for recovery may be determined only after the procedure has been performed.
Recovery and Results
Recovery period from a neck lift surgery may vary between one to two weeks in most cases, depending on the extent of procedure performed and the natural healing ability of the patient. Following the post-op instructions of the
plastic surgeon will also help expedite the recovery. Bruising and swelling are likely to last for several days following a neck lift. Tingling sensation, tightness in the treated area or numbness may be felt for a few days.
The surgeon may prescribe pain relieving medication to keep the patient comfortable during recovery. If the patient experiences any symptoms such as fever, pus discharge or other persistent signs of discomfort, he or she should get in touch with the surgeon immediately. It is important to avoid the post-surgical risk of infection for complete and timely healing.
