What is Neck Liposuction?

Neck liposuction is a plastic surgery procedure designed to reduce excess fat deposits in the neck area and under the chin. The youthful contour of the jaw gets compromised when stubborn fats accumulate around the neck. It is difficult to reduce these fat pockets with diet or exercise for many patients. If the patient is bothered by this condition and looking for an effective solution, the cosmetic surgeon may recommend neck liposuction. The procedure involves surgical sculpting of the neck area and the removal of excess fat tissue to ensure that the angular shape of the chin and jaw are restored. Dr. Seify is an experienced plastic surgeon providing this procedure to his patients in Newport Beach, Orange County, CA and nearby areas. He will first evaluate a patient’s health condition, neck and facial anatomy and their aesthetic goals before recommending a neck liposuction surgery.

Good Candidates

A good candidate for neck liposuction plastic surgery is person with moderate weight, but having excess fat deposits in the neck region. If these fats have not responded to diet or exercise, the patient may consider a neck liposuction surgery. Individuals with a fair amount of skin elasticity and firmness of skin can achieve very good results with this procedure. The ideal candidate will have good physical health and realistic expectations from the procedure. Age is not a key factor for this surgery, but older patients may have suffered from loss of skin elasticity, which can make the outcome less effective compared to younger patients.

Procedure

Neck liposuction can be performed on an outpatient basis in most cases. If the procedure involves removal of only a small amount of neck fat, liposuction may be performed under local anesthesia. However, the cosmetic surgeon may decide to use local anesthesia along with IV sedation, depending on the patient’s needs. In case of an extensive surgery, general anesthesia may be used. The procedure begins with the surgeon making a small incision in pre-determined area in the neck, through which localized fat deposits are removed. A narrow tube or cannula is inserted through the incision to vacuum the layer of stubborn fat in the deep underlying areas of the skin. The cannula is used to suction out the fat cells that have been broken down. Once the desired amount fat has been removed and the neck and chin are re-contoured, the plastic surgeon will close the incision with sutures.

Recovery

The neck liposuction recovery may take about a week to 10 days. For the first one or two days, the surgeon may place a tiny drainage tube underneath the skin to prevent fluid buildup. A surgical garment around the treated area may have to be worn for a few weeks to expedite healing and achieve the best possible new contours. Antibiotics may be prescribed for a few days to counter the risk of infection that is typically associated with a plastic surgery procedure. Temporary post-op pain and discomfort may be experienced by most patients. An experienced surgeon will use advanced surgical techniques so that the post-op discomfort is minimized. However, some mild level of pain, swelling, burning sensation, numbness and bleeding may still be experienced. The surgeon will prescribe pain relieving medications for a few days to manage the discomfort. Sutures will be removed or dissolve on their own in the first one week or 10 days, following which the healing will be faster and better. Most patients can resume their regular everyday activities after this period, but strenuous exercises and heavy lifting should be avoided for at least four weeks. Full effects of the neck liposuction cosmetic surgery will be visible as the swelling subsides over several weeks.

Results

Perceptible difference in the neck contour and shape of the neck and chin can be noticed quite early after the surgery. Within four to six weeks, the results will become more apparent as most of the swelling will subside. Complete swelling may disappear anywhere between three and six months after surgery, when the final neck contour will become visible. Patients with realistic expectations from the outcome can draw the maximum satisfaction from the procedure. With a balanced diet and regular exercise, the new shape of the neck and chin can be maintained for a long time.
