One of the most important distinctions in facial rejuvenation? Volume loss vs. tissue descent. ✨
They can look similar, but they require very different treatment approaches.
Volume loss happens when the face loses the fullness and support it once had—commonly in areas like the cheeks, temples, and around the eyes.
Tissue descent happens when facial structures begin to shift downward. This can lead to lower-looking cheeks, less definition along the jawline, jowling, and changes in the transition between the face and neck.
This distinction matters because not every sign of facial aging should be treated by adding more volume.
While filler can be an excellent tool for restoring lost volume, it cannot reliably reposition tissue that has descended. In the wrong patient, adding more filler may actually make the face appear heavier without addressing the underlying cause.
The key to natural-looking facial rejuvenation is identifying what has actually changed: volume, position, or a combination of both.
Once we understand the cause, we can create a much more precise and individualized treatment plan.
