Skin cancer is one of the most common types of neck and head cancers. The good news is that it can be treated easily when diagnosed early. Dr. Hisham Seify works with skin cancer patients to assist in repairing the damage left from the skin cancer and the removal of skin cancer tissue. Depending upon where the cancer cells have spread, Dr. Seify may perform an excision or Mohs surgery. The excision is intended to remove a small lesion that is contained. An excision is chosen when there does not appear to be cancerous cells that have spread beneath the skin surface. The small area of skin that is excised is typically repaired with a simple closure procedure. Mohs surgery may be recommended if cancerous cells have spread beneath the surface level of the skin. The intention of this surgery is to remove all of the tissue until Dr. Seify is able to find a clear margin which is an area where the skin cancer has not spread. In order to achieve this, Dr. Seify will remove tissue and then have it examined microscopically by a pathologist. If he is able to obtain a clear margin the wound will be closed. However, if the margin is not clear a larger section of tissue is likely to be removed and examined. Have a question about skin cancer reconstruction? In some cases, multiple procedures may be necessary to reconstruct the area in which the skin cancer was removed. Reconstruction consists of options such as using a local flap, or skin grafting depending on several different factors including the size and location of the wound.
