women in businessThe New York Times website posted a recent study that drew a conclusion that those who have had cosmetic surgery did not increase that much in attractiveness or a youthful appearance. Looking at this study, one might be thinking “well, what’s the point in plastic surgery?” The study did raise some points, but the article pointed out that there were some flaws in the study. The article introduced the study as follows: “Patients who get facial plastic surgery often assume that they will look younger and more appealing afterward. But a new study, the first to try to quantify attractiveness after a face-lift, brow-lift or eyelid surgery, found only a tiny, insignificant increase in attractiveness. The study, published online in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery on Thursday, also found that patients looked, on average, only three years younger, as judged by independent viewers who assessed photos of patients before and after cosmetic surgery.”

Findings in the plastic surgery study and its flaws in the conclusion

The study had 50 people rating 49 people ages 42 to 73 who had undergone plastic surgery. Also, the study had not one rater see the “pre- and postoperative shots of the same person, lest they deduce the study’s aim, and at a six-month follow-up, patients were excluded if they had had a nose job or injections of anti-wrinkle medicines like Botox.” When the raters were to guess the patients’ ages they found that the guesses were about “2.1 years younger, on average, than their chronological age before surgery, and 5.2 years younger after surgery, an overall difference of 3.1 years, with minimal changes in attractiveness.” Although the findings are disappointing some plastic surgeons who have read the study found some flaws such as the small sample of raters in the study. Also, one plastic surgeon pointed out that “they are looking at a face that looks older in some ways, and younger in some ways. It’s difficult for the raters, and confusing.” Another had said that “assigning numbers has an incredible potential to be misused.”

Plastic surgery Still Has its Benefits with Dr. Seify

juvederm 4This above study that the New York Times pointed out raised some interesting points, but there are flaws that led to their conclusion.  Plastic surgery still has it merits in terms of looking younger and refining features. At Dr. Seify’s practice, we believe that it is not about total alteration of the face and body to the point where it looks unnatural or unrecognizable. And bottom line, it matters only to the patient if he or she is happy with the results. If you still want to take the plastic surgery route where you are sure to find satisfying results for yourself, call and schedule a consultation with Dr. Seify.
As the aging population becomes a more influential part of the population is becoming obvious that getting older does not mean that patients cannot look their best. A facelift has long been the landmark of proof that a person is showing the signs of aging on their face. Many plastic surgeons perform facelift some patients who are well into their 70s and 80s. However, it is important to realize that there is a difference between a person’s real age and their biologically. In reality this can be a huge difference. Dr. Seify explains to his patients that the real distinction in whether or not a patient is too old for a facelift is primarily rooted in their health status. There are some patients who are 60 however there biological health is similar to that of a 90-year-old old because of lifestyle choices like smoking, excessive drinking, or less than admirable eating habits. This is when Dr. Seify’s medical judgment has to be considered when deciding whether or not to proceed with facelift surgery for this type of patient. When patients move forward with facelift surgery Dr. Seify is careful to inform them of potential risk that and possible complications that are related to the surgery and post surgery. For older patients Dr. Seify may work with the primary care physician to assure a safe plan of action for the patient. Also medical clearance performed by their primary care physician will be required prior to surgery. Patients who have cardiac concerns for example, may have a different plan of action because of the impact the surgical procedure can have on the patient especially with respect to the type of anesthesia that would be utilized. The results of a facelift on older patients are generally very good provided the patient is in good health. The patient must be realistic concerning their expected outcome. Patients must take their age and consideration when creating expectation for surgery. It is not likely that they will have a result allowing them to look 35 years younger than their real age. However secondary facelift procedures according to several different published studies can yield results for patients that allow them to look 7 to 10 years younger than their real age. With patients living longer, it is not uncommon for patients to have undergone two or three facelifts well into their 70s and 80s. Dr. Seify encourages patients to look and feel their best at every stage of their life. Patients were considering a facelift are encouraged to contact Dr. Seify and schedule a consultation. Loss of vision as we age is probably one of the conditions everyone will face eventually. Vision is impaired as we age not only because of eyesight but for some patients also due to droopy eyelids. As the laxity of the skin on the eyelids becomes a greater issue with aging the eyelid skin can become so droopy that patients cannot see clearly. Unfortunately the body compensates for this and patients lift their brow eventually add habit without ever realizing that they cannot see well. Dr. Seify treats patients who have excessive loose skin on their upper eyelids. The procedure is called blepharoplasty. A small ellipse of skin is removed from the upper eyelid in the crease. The incision is sutured and well hidden in the crease. This lifts the eyelid and allows the patient to have better vision. A side benefit of the procedure is that the eyes have a much more youthful appearance once the loose skin is removed. If the vision is severely impaired for the patient there is a chance that the procedure could be covered financially by insurance or Medicare. Recently private advocacy groups have published some negative reports regarding the coverage of blepharoplasty by Medicare and or private insurance. In their published reports they have surmised that a majority of patients seeking blepharoplasty are really cosmetic cases just trying to take advantage of Medicare or private insurance. While it is understandable that an outside group may believe that plastic surgeons would falsify necessary information to have payment covered through Medicare or private insurance; the reality is that most plastic surgeons are committed to following necessary guidelines for submitting proper claims to either Medicare or private insurance. It is important for patients to understand that submitting their blepharoplasty claim to insurance is not something they should be ashamed of. If the claim falls within the guidelines of the insurer whether it is Medicare or private insurance then the patient has passed the necessary requirements and is entitled to have the procedure covered. Dr. Seify will submit claims for patients when he believes there blepharoplasty should be covered. Patient should be prepared to provide payment should be insurance or Medicare be unwilling to deem the blepharoplasty as necessary. Blepharoplasty is an excellent solution for patients who are living with compromised peripheral vision. The cosmetic aspect is a welcome to benefit. Patients who are considering blepharoplasty are encouraged to contact Dr. Seify and schedule a consultation. Review all of Dr. Seify’s Procedures and Treatments:
Prior to the popularity of the Internet the decision to have plastic surgery was one that patients had to make with very little access to additional resources to help them make to make a decision. Fast-forward to today and you will find that there are more articles and websites dedicated to plastic surgery than any one person could read it seems a lifetime. While information, research, and education are critical to the plastic surgery decision balance is also necessary in order to make the best decisions. It is important to note that cosmetic plastic surgery is elective which means that there is not a medical reason or healing that will result from surgery. This does not mean that patients should view the surgery as routine and easy. The reality is surgery should always be viewed as serious and the risk of complications should never be viewed lightly. While it is true that cosmetic plastic surgery has an extremely low risk of serious complications, patient should still be well-informed of all risk that pertain to each procedure. There is not a magic number that will prove a patient has done the correct amount of research or had enough initial consultations to determine which plastic surgeon they trust to perform their plastic surgery. There are specific factors that should be included when determining if a specific plastic surgeon is the right fit for the patient. For example, is the plastic surgeon board-certified specifically in plastic surgery? This is extremely important because it helps the patient to determine the credentialing of the plastic surgeon and is easily verified by checking the ASPS website. Another important factor is the level of comfort the patient has with the plastic surgeon. Plastic surgeons should be forthcoming with not only the” good news”(all of the good things that can happen) but also the “bad news”(risk and complications as they specifically relate to the patient). Initial consultation should not be narrowed down to ”shopping”. While no one will dispute that price factors into cosmetic elective procedures when price is the driving factor is easy to overlook other important factors including safety and the overall cosmetic surgery experience. Dr. Seify helps patients to understand in the initial consultation that he is committed to not only providing excellent results in the safest manner possible but also helping patients to make informed decisions related to the overall cosmetic surgery experience. Dr. Seify his practice is a full-service practice offering procedures including breast augmentation, liposuction, facelift, blepharoplasty, and other popular procedures. Patients were considering cosmetic plastic surgery are encouraged to contact Dr. Seify’s office and schedule a consultation.
Choosing to have cosmetic surgery or other cosmetic procedures is a step towards what for many is a lifetime of maintaining their best appearance. According to recent online article Botox leads the pack in the most performed cosmetic procedure. Due to the fact that this procedure is noninvasive, the demographic has shifted is well. Previously a plastic surgery patient was most likely to choose plastic surgery procedures such as a facelift; and therefore, was  to be older. Now patients between the ages of 35 and 50 are responsible for nearly 50% of all cosmetic procedures performed in the US. Starting younger with cosmetic procedures is based on the idea that patients can avoid the signs of aging longer. For most patients the goal is not necessarily to look decades younger, but rather to look fresher at their current stage of life. According to the article, good skin care should be developed starting in the teen years. This is also when patients should get into the habit of wearing sunscreen everyday regardless of the weather. This is also the best time to learn that the tanning bed is your enemy. Tanning outside is also a bad idea not only for the appearance of the skin but also for your health. In your 20s the delicate area around eyes can start to show signs of aging. This is when patients should begin to use an effective eye cream. Wearing sunglasses is also recommended to avoid squinting and line that form on the outer corner the eyes known as crows feet. Micro dermabrasion is also very effective at smoothing skin and improving the skin tone. This is an excellent time to begin routine medical grade micro dermabrasion treatments. This is not too early to begin Botox treatments. In your 30s is when you first begin to see more obvious signs of aging. Botox and fillers are likely to be used in this stage of life. Botox paralyzes the muscle in the forehead treating forehead lines and wrinkles. Fillers like Restylane and Juvederm  treat areas like the nasolabial folds that can look like parentheses around the mouth. This is also when most women will consider pregnancy related surgeries including breast augmentation, liposuction, and abdominoplasty. In your 40s is when the payoff for taking care of your skin and your 20s and 30s allows you to use maintenance to maintain your best appearance. You may elect for a surgical procedure for slight tightening such as a mini facelift while continuing injectables and Botox. In your 50s and beyond a blepharoplasty for the eyelids may be needed to maintain your most youthful appearance. Most patients will continue procedures both surgical as well as noninvasive throughout their lifetime an effort to maintain their best overall appearance. Dr. Seify reminds patients that the payoff for taking care of your skin and overall appearance as well as health comes in the later years. Whether it is cosmetic surgery or cosmetic procedures older patients who enjoy the benefits of these procedures most are those who started cosmetic procedures early in life. Dr. Seify encourages patients who are considering cosmetic surgery or cosmetic procedures to contact his office for a consultation to determine which procedures are best for them.
eyelid surgeryEyelid surgery can be considered by patients for many different reasons. Eyelid surgery is considered plastic surgery yet it is not always considered a cosmetic procedure. A small percentage of patients could have what is considered an excessive amount of loose and lax skin on the eyelid, which in turn obstructs their vision. This amount of skin which is also known as “hooding” could cause the patient to be a candidate for reconstructive plastic surgery, which could mean that insurance would cover some of, if not all of the surgical fees.

Eyelid Surgery and Insurance Coverage

It is important to note that very few patients actually meet the criteria of the insurance companies in order to have the procedure covered. It is even more difficult obtain approval through Medicare to have the procedure covered. This does not in any way mean that the procedure is not warranted or that it would not greatly improve the patient’s vision as well as appearance. Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is often one of the last procedures patients consider when they are beginning to notice the first signs of aging. The reality is that eyelid surgery, performed early before the loose and lax skin on the eyelid is excessive, can make a dramatic difference in the youthful appearance of a patient.

Eyelid Surgery at Newport Plastic Surgery

Dr. Seify explains that the laxity of the skin is best when a patient is younger and the results tend to be better. Most patients who consider eyelid surgery also include the area beneath the eyes which often has a pocket of loose skin and fat that many call” bags beneath the eyes”. Dr. Seify is usually able to address both areas together and most patients are socially acceptable in public without little evidence that they had cosmetic plastic surgery within two weeks. Dr. Seify encourages patients who are considering eyelid surgery to schedule a consultation to discover if blepharoplasty is a viable solution for them.
faceliftFacelift is one of the terms that is most often misused and interchanged when speaking about cosmetic plastic surgery. Of course, in its simplest form it would mean lifting the skin on the face. But, in reality it is so much more. Patients are rarely confused as to whether or not they are a candidate for facelift because it is rather straightforward.

Facelift Value and Choices

When there’s loose and lax skin on the face and the aging process is well underway then a facelift can make a measurable difference. It is important for patients to understand that the type of facelift that is needed, genetics, lifestyle choices, and the skill of the surgeon will all be determining factors in and aesthetically pleasing result that meets or exceeds the expectation of the patient. Dr. Seify explains to patients who are considering facelift that they must first consider their aesthetic desires. For example, are they considering a long-term result or a short term “fix”? Depending upon their age, is this the first facelift and do they intend for it to be their last? This is important because a quick fix will likely have temporary results and in order for patients to be happy with their decision they have to be willing to accept a temporary result by either having another surgery if the need arises, or living with the differences in the results as the patient ages. The key factor to remember when considering a facelift, is that after a facelift, the patient will continue to age. This means that the skin laxity will continue to be affected as well as the underlying tissue and muscles. This means that facelift results are not permanent.

Facelift Patients Likely To Be Pleased

Overwhelmingly, studies have shown that patients who choose a facelift tend to look 7 to 10 years younger than their stated age for the rest of their life. A true facelift(not a modified facelift or superficial skin tightening) incorporates tightening muscle, tissue, and skin. It includes the neck area, the jaw line and up through the brow. Most patients incorporate a brow lift and blepharoplasty for the best aesthetic overall appearance. A facelift remains the best value because of long-term results patients can expect. Dr. Seify encourages patients to schedule a consultation to discuss available facial rejuvenation options.
The popularity of noninvasive procedures continues to soar. Most patients have come to expect safety no matter where they choose to have their procedure performed. Patient should be aware that there are little to no standards in terms of the safety of what many of come to call a Med-Spa. Dr. Seify operates a med spa within his practice under his supervision. He requires his medical aesthetician’s to not only carry a valid license but also participate in ongoing technical training so that their credentials are superior. Dr. Seify offers injectable services including Botox and dermal fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm. These procedures are performed by Dr. Seify using his surgical skill and artistic expertise to achieve maximum results. The medical aestheticians offer a wide variety of procedures which include laser procedures for vein treatment, hair reduction, and skin tightening. For many patients the results are visible in only a few treatments. Dr. Seify also offers cellulite reduction treatments for patients who have those concerns.  Patients can be assured that by being in a medical office close attention is paid to the medical aspect of every procedure that has been performed. Also, as an ASPS board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Seify is able to offer solid recommendations and contrast the benefits of noninvasive procedures versus surgical procedures. This allows Dr. Seify to manage patient’s expectations so that patients do not expect a surgical result from a noninvasive procedure. Patients are encouraged to make an appointment for consultation to discuss which noninvasive procedures will work best for them.
eyelid surgery patientEyelid surgery is a fairly common surgery .There are no guarantees with any surgery especially cosmetic eye lid plastic surgery. Unlike medically necessary surgeries the results and cosmetic or elective surgery are largely subjective and based on patient expectations. In some cases the results can be particularly disappointing. Blepharoplasty or eyelid lift surgery is a detailed procedure designed to remove the excess skin from the top of the eyelids and or the bags beneath the eyes. In most cases patients are able to achieve a much more youthful look with a wider looking eyelid and the removal of the bags or fat pockets beneath the eyes.

Eyelid Lift Complications

For some, the results are not as expected and the result can be extremely undesirable. This could include everything from eyelids that appear uneven to difficulty closing the eyelid. Dr. Seify specializes in eyelid revision surgery. It is important for patients to understand that the first point of communication is they are unhappy with their eyelid surgery should be the operating surgeon. If those results are not satisfactory then Dr. Seify is more than happy to consult with patient. It is common for patients to believe because they have already had eyelid surgery that their case should not be very involved. Many believe that it is “just” one adjustment or another in order to achieve a better result.

Eyelid Revision Surgery

The truth is every surgery is involved surgery. Dr. Seify must take into account the existence of scar tissue from the previous surgery and work delicately around that area. In many cases he must also address the functionality of the eye and be sure that it has not been compromised. While there is a chance that the procedure may be covered under insurance the likelihood is that it will not. This is especially true if the original surgery was a cosmetic procedure. Dr. Seify exam the patient and makes a recommendation based on when he feels he can accomplish in his hands. Patient should be prepared for a candid recommendation. If Dr. Seify is not comfortable with a reoperation he will explain to the patient the reasons why he is making that recommendation and in some cases offer additional solutions. For patients were unhappy with their eyelid lift procedure Dr. Seify encourages them to make a complimentary consultation appointment to determine if revision plastic surgery is a viable option.
faceliftFacelift procedures used to be considered extravagant and over the top cosmetic surgeries. Thanks to technology, new surgical methods, and increased patient confidence the facelift procedure has come to be known as a viable alternative to reducing the signs of aging on the face. Most notably, loose and lax skin along the jaw line and excessive skin around the neck are usually the driving forces for patients who are considering a facelift.

Facelift  Is Worth the Investment

It can be very confusing for patients who are trying to make sense of an abundance of information when considering a facelift. For most patients it makes sense to start with the least invasive cosmetic procedures available when considering facial rejuvenation. The reality is patient should consider procedures that will work based on their specific situation and the progression of aging on the face. For example, a patient should not expect the same results a brow lift can achieve from simple Botox injections. They can expect temporary slight improvement, but if a brow lift is indicated then a simple injection cannot possibly render the same results.

Facelift at Newport Plastic

Dr. Seify explains to patients that although facial rejuvenation can include a combination of procedures including brow lift, blepharoplasty, cheek lift, and facelift each procedure has advantages and limitations. Choosing certain procedures and omitting others will change the end result of the procedure. Patients who desire the best value for the dollars that they are investing in facial rejuvenation should consider the facelift if Dr. Seify recommends the procedure and states that they are a good candidate. Numerous studies have proven that the facelift is the best value for the money long-term. Most patients even as they age with their facelift maintain a look that appears to be 10 to 15 years younger than their stated age. Most patients will have only one facelift in their lifetime. Although the initial outlay of money may seem steep for some patients, overall a facelift continues to be the best value based on the amount of time a patient and enjoy satisfying results. Dr. Seify encourages patients to consult with him to determine if a facelift is the right recommendation to help them minimize the appearance of aging on their face.
