Facelift Revision Surgery

Facelift Revision Surgery CandidatesThere are various reasons why a patient may consider a revision facelift regardless of whether they has had a primary facelift cosmetic surgery a few months or a few years ago.

A facelift is meant to restore a more youthful look and delay the signs of facial aging. But it cannot prevent aging in the future altogether.

With more time and sun exposure, patients may notice sagging in the jowls or under the eyes since their initial facelift. This aging process is natural, primarily as the fatty tissue of the face reduces over a period. This is when many patients choose a facelift revision surgery.

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Hisham Seify provides facelift revision surgery to patients in Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, and other towns and neighborhoods in SoCal.

Need for a Revision Facelift

The patient could have received their initial facelift cosmetic surgery with inappropriate techniques or by a less experienced or less trained surgeon. In these cases, the patient may have an unnatural or “over done” appearance to their face after the primary surgery.

This issue is sometimes seen in patients who undergo a facelift with techniques that only lift and tighten the skin rather than rework the deeper muscle and tissue layers of the face (which can be achieved through the use of a deep plane or SMAS lift approach).

Candidates for a Revision Facelift

If a patient experiences the following issues after their primary facelift, they may be an ideal candidate for a facelift revision surgical procedure:

  • Unnatural outcomes that seem pulled or overdone
  • Skin sagging beneath the jawline and in the mid-face area
  • Fat loss in the under eyes, upper cheeks, around the lips or in the mouth region
  • Folds around the mouth and lower eyelids
  • Excess fat deposits in the jowls and neck

Ideal candidates for a facelift revision surgery are in optimal physical and emotional health. Revision facelift surgery candidates should not smoke and take anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin for a minimum of two weeks prior to the surgery to decrease the risks of complications. Furthermore, patients should develop realistic expectation regarding the results as with any surgery.

Characteristics of Ideal Candidates

Good candidates for a facelift revision will usually have the following attributes:

Degree of Skin Elasticity

Ideal candidates for a facelift revision procedure possess skin with a certain level of flexibility, elasticity, and pliancy. The surgeon will tighten the skin on the face to mitigate the appearance of wrinkles during the revision procedure. The patient will experience outcomes that are smooth and look natural when pulled tight if the skin has some degree of elasticity.

Strong Bone Structure

A candidate for a revision facelift should have a well-defined underlying bone structure. This offers support to the procedure leading to outcomes that are more sustainable. In case the patient’s features are less distinctive, they can choose implants for the face in addition to or instead of a facelift revision surgery.

Realistic Expectations

The candidate should clearly understand what a facelift revision surgery can and cannot offer. They should view multiple facelift revision before and after images to gauge what this procedure can do for them.

Facelift Revision

Facelift Revision Surgery procedure StepsCosmetic problems with the primary facelift and post-surgical deformities are common reasons for many patients to seek a revision facelift cosmetic surgery. During the initial consultation, the surgeon will explain the steps involved in facelift revision procedure.

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Hisham Seify provides facelift revision surgery to patients in Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, and surrounding locations.

Need for a Facelift Revision Procedure

A potential issue with the primary facelift surgery in some cases may be the appearance of overly tight skin (often known as the “wind-swept” deformity). This condition is most prominent near the corners of the mouth because the posterior pulling stretches the skin in this region in an undesirable manner creating an unappealing contour and an “operated” appearance.

A similar issue may occur in the neck area as well when the neck skin is tightened without the treatment of the neck muscles. This causes the appearance of two tight bands in the anterior neck (the medial edges of the platysma muscles) known as the “cobra neck” deformity.

In both of these deformities, the patient requires a revision facelift plastic surgery. The revision facelift will involve more in-depth dissection and focus on repositioning the deep connective muscle and tissue layers of the neck and face.

Some other typical problems after traditional facelifts are an incomplete treatment or an early recurrence of the jowls as well as continuous droopiness of the cheek region (known as mid-face ptosis). While these issues are different, they occur due to the same reason-the incomplete release of the soft tissues of the face.

The surgeon can make sure that the patient does not experience these problems by performing a more comprehensive facelift, yet not placing a more substantial incision. On top of this, patients who have undergone a facelift in the past but have faced these problems can choose a revision facelift procedure for the treatment of the jowls and lifting the cheeks.

Steps in the Revision Facelift Procedure

Administering the anesthesia is the initial step in any major plastic surgery procedure such as a facelift. The surgeon may choose general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation. The decision on the type of anesthesia to be used will be taken before the surgery and depends on the patient’s ability to undergo general anesthesia, which the surgeon will evaluate beforehand.

Incision Placement

The surgeon will place incisions after the anesthesia to perform the revision procedure. In order to minimize the appearance of any resulting scarring, the surgeon will place the incisions as discreetly as possible. The incision is typically positioned within the hairline. However, the extent of the incisions may differ on the basis of the revision facelift technique that the surgeon will use.

Muscle and Skin Tightening

The surgeon will lift the skin of the face through the incisions. They will then remove or redistribute surplus fats, tighten the underlying sagging muscles, and trim away the extra facial skin.

After enhancing the facial contours, the surgeon will drape the skin back smoothly and tightly making use of sutures and staples. After this, they will apply a bandage to the incision sites to support the healing of the area.

Combining Other Procedures with Facelift Revision

The patient may choose to combine a facelift revision with other procedures to accomplish more comprehensive outcomes, in consultation with the surgeon. The surgeon may perform facial and neck liposuction to remove fatty pockets in the area, enhancing the facial contours.

Facelift Revision

Facelift Revision Plastic Surgery Risks & Safety - Newport PlasticWhile a facelift is a proven and effective surgical procedure, it involves specific risks similar to any cosmetic surgery. At the time of pre-operative consultation, the surgeon will discuss the potential risks with the patient to help them make an informed decision.

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Hisham Seify provides facelift revision surgery to patients in Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, and surrounding communities.

Common Risks

Facelift surgery can turn back the clock by treating saggy skin, tightening facial muscles and improving the contours of the face. However, it can also lead to issues such as:

  • Adverse response to anesthesia: Anesthesia is safe for a majority of patients. But patients suffering from underlying medical conditions may be at-risk for stroke, heart attack and other severe problems.
  • Infection: Every surgery has a certain risk of infection. But when the surgeons and the surgical venues follow the correct sanitation protocols, this risk is negligible.
  • Hematoma: If the patient suffers bleeding underneath the skin, it can be very uncomfortable for them as well as lead to inflammation and discoloration of the skin. The only solution to this problem is surgical intervention.
  • Nerve damage: In exceptional cases, the surgery may cause a nerve to be cut, cauterized or nicked leading to facial paralysis or numbness. However, when this does happen, the adverse outcomes may resolve over time.
  • Visible scarring: A facelift always involves some scarring. However, the scarring is discreet in most cases. On occasion, there may be some mild marks that are not hidden behind in the hair or behind the ear.

Patients should evaluate the potential risks and benefits of a revision facelift plastic surgery before deciding to undergo the procedure.

Minimizing Risks

Complications arising from facelift surgery are uncommon. However, patients can undertake some things to mitigate the risk from the procedure even more. Firstly, patients should select a highly-trained cosmetic surgeon.

Secondly, they should be forthcoming and honest with their surgeon about their medical history, smoking, and drug use. Withholding such information may lead to severe complications that are otherwise avoidable.

Furthermore, the patient should be prepared to follow the surgeon’s pre and post-operative guidelines diligently. Lastly, it is vital to stop smoking a couple of weeks before and after the facelift procedure. Patients who do not follow these instructions have a higher chance of developing difficulties in healing, noticeable scarring, and unfavorable outcomes.

Safety Data

People concerned about the complications enlisted above should be aware that these problems occur exceptionally rarely. Most patients experience a smooth procedure, rapid recovery, and desirable aesthetic outcomes.

Researchers indicate that hematoma is the most common complication following facelift surgery. It affects one to three percent of females and seven to nine percent of males. The risk for hematoma development is apparently higher for men. Other reasons that may increase the chance of developing a hematoma are smoking, using NSAIDs or aspirin, and high blood pressure.

Nerve Damage

The second most common facelift surgery risk is the dreaded complication of nerve damage. Fortunately, the rates of nerve damage after this surgery are low. Only 0.5 to 2.6% of all facelift patients suffer nerve paralysis.

What is a Facelift?

Rhytidectomy or facelift surgery is designed to restore a more youthful appearance to the face by tightening the facial skin and underlying loose muscles and tissue. With facelift surgery, it is possible take several years off the patient’s face and reduce major wrinkles and sagging facial skin. Many times a facelift plastic surgery procedure is combined with a neck lift to achieve more consistent looking appearance. Incisions are made along the hairline to keep them discreet, and the surgeon removes excess skin and fat through the incisions, as well as tightens the underlying muscles and tissue. The tightened skin is then re-draped over the face smoothly to provide a younger looking facial profile. Patients in and around Newport Beach and Orange County, CA may consult with Dr. Seify to learn more about facelift cosmetic surgery.

Cost Components

The cost of any surgical procedure, including a facelift, is a combination of several cost components that may vary from one location to another and even from one practice to another in the same location. Geographical factors can influence the overall cost of procedure to an extent. For instance the cost of a facelift in Newport Beach and Orange County, CA is likely to be different from the cost of the same procedure in Pennsylvania. This occurs because the cost of living index varies from state to state and even from city to city in some cases. The costs of all goods and services, including surgical services are impacted by this index in a particular area. The key cost components to be considered in a facelift procedure are as follows: Surgeon’s Fee The fee of the plastic surgeon who performs a facelift procedure will constitute an important part of the overall cost of procedure. The fee charged by the surgeon may depend on his or her skills, experience and reputation in the area of facelift surgery. More demand from patients may mean that the surgeon has limited time, and may charge a higher fee per patient. However, the American Society for Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recommends that patients should choose the most appropriate surgeon for their needs, and the surgeon’s fee should only be a secondary consideration. Operating Facility Costs The costs of the surgical facility where the facelift procedure is performed form a key component of overall costs. A state of the art operating room facility with experienced support staff, having advanced equipment and technology, and providing high quality comforts and services may cost more, which will add to the overall costs of the facelift procedure.  Costs of Anesthesia The facial cosmetic surgeon will usually perform the facelift procedure under general anesthesia. The fee of the anesthesiologist and their team is another significant cost component to be considered. For the safety and success of the procedure, the anesthesia team also plays a key role. Therefore, it is advisable to have an experienced operating and anesthesia team in place for this surgery. Other Costs When preparing the total cost estimate for the facelift procedure, a patient should also account for costs of any medical tests, prescription medications, and any additional expenses that may be involved. Facelift Surgery Newport Beach

Facelift surgery newport beachDr. Hisham Seify is a board certified plastic surgeon providing advanced plastic surgery and reconstructive procedures for the breast, body, and face. He has received nearly 13 years of post-graduate training, including international training in general and cosmetic surgery before he completed his Doctor of Science degree at Emory University in the U.S. in 1998. For his contributions as a cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Seify has received several honors, including the prestigious Sherrell J. Aston Award from the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Patients in Newport Beach, Orange County, CA and surrounding communities have an opportunity to receive magnificent, standout, and long lasting surgical treatments from Dr. Seify.

What is a Facelift?

Your face is the most conspicuous and visible part of the body, and signs of aging can start showing at the earliest on the face. Skin laxity may start becoming visible in the cheek region, forehead and neck, and wrinkles, creases, folds, and fine lines may make a person appear older than he or she really may be. Facelift plastic surgery procedure is specifically designed for such patients who are keen to reduce the signs of aging from the face and achieve a rejuvenated facial appearance for the long term. In some cases, the cosmetic surgeon may decide to combine a facelift with a neck lift in order to achieve more consistent and comprehensive outcomes. The procedure can typically take seven to 10 years off the patient’s face. A facelift can help tighten the lax skin on the lower and mid face, while a neck lift will improve the laxity in the neck area. The procedure involves removal of excess skin and tightening of underlying facial and neck muscles.

Initial Consultation

During the initial consultation for facelift cosmetic surgery for his patients in and around Newport Beach and Orange County, CA, Dr. Seify will first evaluate the patient’s general health condition, medical history and aesthetic goals. He may recommend facelift or other treatment options and help the patient make a well-informed decision in accordance with his or her aesthetic goals. An experienced plastic surgeon will also show before and after pictures of previous patients that can reveal what a facelift can or cannot do. This helps a patient have realistic expectations from the procedure and achieve the best possible satisfaction levels from the outcome.

Pre-op Instructions

The surgeon will advise the patient to quit smoking several weeks prior to the procedure. If the patient takes medications such as aspirin, the surgeon will require these medications to be stopped for a few weeks before surgery in consultation with the physician. Some antibiotic drugs may be prescribed to minimize the chances of any infection during or after surgery. The facelift procedure may involve shaving a tiny amount of hair around the ears and temples prior to surgery.

A facelift procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia to ensure complete patient comfort. Surgical incisions are made inside the hairline at the temple in a discreet way, and also in front of the ear, around the earlobe and behind the ear, ending at the scalp. Through the incisions, the plastic surgeon will tighten loose muscles and connective tissue, and remove excess skin. If the procedure is performed in conjunction with neck lift, an additional incision will be made under the chin to contour the neck. Once the surgery is completed, the incisions will be closed with small sutures. The entire procedure may last for up to five hours, depending on whether the facelift is performed as an independent surgery or in combination with other procedures. As an experienced cosmetic surgeon for facelift, Dr. Seify customizes the treatment approach in accordance with the unique needs of a patient. This helps achieve more effective and satisfactory results as per the patient’s expectations.

Dr. Seify may recommend his patients in and around Newport Beach and Orange County, CA to stay at the facility’s overnight suite. Alternatively, the patient should arrange for someone to drive them to home on the same day and stay with them for at least the first 24 hours. The patient will have a dressing wrapped around the head initially, and surgical drains may or may not be attached. These are usually removed within 24 hours. Stitches around the ears and scalp sutures are removed within a week or 10 days. Sutures are generally removed in stages to minimize scarring. Swelling and discoloration of skin in the affected area will reduce in about two weeks. Face may feel tight for several weeks, which will go away on its own. Dr. Seify recommends his patients to avoid sun exposure for several weeks following the facelift plastic surgery. Non-surgical Facelift with Ultherapy – Newport Beach | Orange County

Newport Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, a premier plastic surgery practice in Newport Beach, CA, focuses on proven and effective aesthetic and reconstructive procedures. Headed by Dr. Hisham Seify, a board certified plastic surgeon, Newport Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery serves patients in Newport Beach, Orange County, CA and surrounding communities. Dr. Seify ensures that patients who may not be ready for cosmetic surgery treatment can still achieve their aesthetic goals with some of the latest non-invasive and minimally invasive cosmetic enhancement procedures. Ultherapy is one such state of the art procedure that avoids the need for surgery and yet achieves benefits similar to those of a facelift. The treatment can be called a non-surgical or non-invasive facelift. It is a proven treatment option for patients looking for facial rejuvenation and skin tightening to achieve a more youthful looking face. Dr. Seify is an award-winning cosmetic surgeon providing this treatment to patients in Newport Beach, Orange County, CA and nearby areas.

Watch an Ultherapy Treatment on The View:

Ulthera Technique Ulthera technology has revolutionized the arena of non-invasive and minimally invasive cosmetic enhancement treatments in some ways. It is the only FDA approved technique that involves the use of ultrasound waves to generate heat in the targeted underlying facial tissue to lift the sagging skin and achieve facial rejuvenation. The technique is proving to be a boon for patients who are keen to reduce signs of aging from their face, but do not wish to undergo plastic surgery. In that sense, Ultherapy is a non-invasive facelift procedure that focuses ultrasound energy on the sagging areas of the face, chin, brows, cheeks and neck to achieve skin firmness. The heat generated in the deeper soft tissue layers of the skin promotes the growth of new collagen. Over a period of two to three months, the skin becomes smoother, lifted and toned, and the face appears more youthful. The procedure avoids all the typical risks and potential side effects associated with a cosmetic surgery treatment.

Natural Looking Facelift

Face is considered as a relatively harder area for surgical cosmetic improvement because of delicate facial organs and lesser fat and tissue deposits on the face. Facelift plastic surgery can produce dramatic results for the face, but not every patient may be ready for such substantive changes or willing to go for surgery. This is where Ultherapy can be used as a safe, effective and FDA approved treatment to stimulate the deeper layers of facial skin that provide structural support to the face. Ultherapy avoids any damage to the top layer of the skin, and biostimulates production of new collagen to achieve more natural looking results in a gradual manner. Patient experiences a healthy revving up of the facial tissue on the inside, and the results become visible on the outside in a natural way over a period of two to three months. The treatment involves no downtime, no foreign substances, and a supple and elastic facial skin is achieved without any radical changes. Lifting and tightening can be seen along the jawline, under the chin, and around the eyelids and brows. women in businessThe New York Times website posted a recent study that drew a conclusion that those who have had cosmetic surgery did not increase that much in attractiveness or a youthful appearance. Looking at this study, one might be thinking “well, what’s the point in plastic surgery?” The study did raise some points, but the article pointed out that there were some flaws in the study. The article introduced the study as follows: “Patients who get facial plastic surgery often assume that they will look younger and more appealing afterward. But a new study, the first to try to quantify attractiveness after a face-lift, brow-lift or eyelid surgery, found only a tiny, insignificant increase in attractiveness. The study, published online in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery on Thursday, also found that patients looked, on average, only three years younger, as judged by independent viewers who assessed photos of patients before and after cosmetic surgery.”

Findings in the plastic surgery study and its flaws in the conclusion

The study had 50 people rating 49 people ages 42 to 73 who had undergone plastic surgery. Also, the study had not one rater see the “pre- and postoperative shots of the same person, lest they deduce the study’s aim, and at a six-month follow-up, patients were excluded if they had had a nose job or injections of anti-wrinkle medicines like Botox.” When the raters were to guess the patients’ ages they found that the guesses were about “2.1 years younger, on average, than their chronological age before surgery, and 5.2 years younger after surgery, an overall difference of 3.1 years, with minimal changes in attractiveness.” Although the findings are disappointing some plastic surgeons who have read the study found some flaws such as the small sample of raters in the study. Also, one plastic surgeon pointed out that “they are looking at a face that looks older in some ways, and younger in some ways. It’s difficult for the raters, and confusing.” Another had said that “assigning numbers has an incredible potential to be misused.”

Plastic surgery Still Has its Benefits with Dr. Seify

juvederm 4This above study that the New York Times pointed out raised some interesting points, but there are flaws that led to their conclusion.  Plastic surgery still has it merits in terms of looking younger and refining features. At Dr. Seify’s practice, we believe that it is not about total alteration of the face and body to the point where it looks unnatural or unrecognizable.
