Types of Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)

Rhinoplasty can be broadly classified into two major types: open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty. Both types of rhinoplasty are equally popular cosmetic surgery procedures, and the surgeon will recommend the appropriate technique according to the patient’s specific cosmetic and anatomical needs.

At the time of pre-op consultation, the surgeon will explain the different nose surgery procedure options available to the patient, and describe their pros and cons and suitability in the patient’s specific case. Board certified, terrific, and successful plastic surgeon Dr. Hisham Seify provides rhinoplasty to patients in Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, and surrounding communities.

Open and Closed Nose Surgery

Only a fully trained and experienced surgeon may be able to perform both types of nose reshaping surgeries with equal expertise. Open rhinoplasty will be used if a substantial nose reshaping surgery is required. The surgeon will place the incisions externally in the vertical strip that separates the nostrils, known as the columella.

The location of the incision will be at the base of the nose, which will ensure minimally visible scarring. The surgeon will lift off the skin and soft tissue through the incision to have a clear view of the nasal anatomy and will delicately address the underlying structures of the nose.

Closed rhinoplasty, on the other hand, is a relatively less invasive plastic surgery technique that is primarily applied for minor nose reshaping. Incisions will be placed within the nostrils in this case. Thereafter, the surgeon will separate the skin of the nose from the cartilage and bone, which comprise the support framework. Bone and cartilage can be removed or reshaped once exposed in order to sculpt the desired new appearance of the nose.

Revision Rhinoplasty

Secondary rhinoplasty or revision rhinoplasty is performed to correct any problems that may persist or develop after a primary nose surgery has been performed. Revision rhinoplasty procedure is usually considered to be more complicated than the primary nose surgery. It can be performed using open or closed technique. The patient should ideally choose a surgeon with training and experience in revision nose surgeries.

Filler Rhinoplasty

This is an upcoming popular technique to perform minor nose reshaping. The surgeon will use selected dermal filler injections to perform a non-surgical rhinoplasty. The filler gel will smooth out sharp angles or alter the angle of the nasal tip to restore symmetry, and fill depressions. The procedure is ideally suited for patients who want to avoid surgery, and are willing to accept the limited and temporary results achieved with filler rhinoplasty.

Types of Techniques

Reduction Rhinoplasty

The surgeon may use this technique to reduce the size of the nose to make it more proportionate with other facial features such as the chin.

Augmentation Rhinoplasty

Bone or tissue grafting may be used in this case to build up the nasal tip and bridge, and augment the overall nose appearance to improve facial balance.

Other Types

Ethnic rhinoplasty, reconstructive rhinoplasty and post-traumatic rhinoplasty are other major types of nose surgery approaches available to the surgeon. Accomplished cosmetic surgeon Dr. Seify receives patients from Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, and other cities and suburbs in this part of The Golden State for rhinoplasty.
