Types of Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery) – Cosmetic Surgery

Rhinoplasty can be performed using open or closed surgical techniques. Apart from the broad classification as open or closed rhinoplasty cosmetic surgery, the procedure can be performed using different surgical approaches according to the unique needs of the patient.

During the initial consultation, the surgeon will discuss various nose surgery options, and help the patient make the choice most suitable for them. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Hisham Seify provides rhinoplasty to patients in Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, and surrounding communities.

Open and Closed Rhinoplasty

If a substantial nose reshaping surgery is required, the surgeon may recommend open rhinoplasty. The incisions in this case will be made externally in the vertical strip that separates the nostrils, called the columella. The incision will be located at the base of the nose, resulting in minimally visible scarring. The surgeon will lift off the skin and soft tissue through the incision to view the nasal anatomy and address the underlying structures of the nose.

Closed rhinoplasty is a less invasive plastic surgery technique that is mainly used for minor nose reshaping. Incisions will be placed within the nostrils. Thereafter, the skin of the nose will be separated from the cartilage and bone, which constitute the support framework. Bone and cartilage can be removed or reshaped once exposed in order to create the desired new appearance of the nose.

Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty, also known as secondary rhinoplasty, is performed to correct concerns that persist or develop after a primary nose surgery procedure. In many cases, revision rhinoplasty procedure is more complex that the original surgery. It can be performed using open or closed technique. The patient should ideally choose a surgeon with adequate experience in revision nose procedures.

Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty

In a few cases, the surgeon may recommend FDA approved dermal filler injections to perform a non-surgical rhinoplasty. The filler gel will smooth out sharp angles or alter the angle of the nasal tip to restore symmetry, and fill depressions. Although results with filler rhinoplasty are not permanent, some patients may want to avoid surgery and choose this option.

Types of Techniques

Reduction Rhinoplasty

The surgeon may perform this technique to reduce the size of the nose to make it more proportionate with other facial features such as the chin. It will involve some amount of removal of the nasal bone and cartilage to create a desirable size of the nose.

Augmentation Rhinoplasty

If the nose is accentuating other facial features because of its disproportionately small size or undermine look, the surgeon may perform augmentation rhinoplasty. This will usually involve bone or tissue grafting to build up the nasal tip and bridge.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty

People of different ethnic origins such as African Americans, Asians, or Hispanics will have some nasal characteristics that are peculiar to their ethnicity. They may receive ethnic rhinoplasty to enhance their nasal contours as required.

Reconstructive rhinoplasty and post-traumatic rhinoplasty are other major types of nose surgery approaches that may be used according to the circumstances of the case. Profound and judicious cosmetic surgeon Dr. Seify receives patients from Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, and other areas of Southern California for rhinoplasty.
